What Is the Volcano Express and Why It Opened in 2025
Iceland’s volcanic activity has defined the country’s landscape, economy, and global image for centuries — but until the Volcano Express opened in March 2025, experiencing it safely meant either driving to an active eruption zone or watching footage on a screen. The Volcano Express sits between those two options: a cinematic motion simulator that uses real eruption footage, drone and satellite imagery, dynamic seating, subsonic audio, and environmental heat effects to create what the operator describes as “the closest you’ll ever get to an active eruption.”
The timing is deliberate. Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula has been erupting continuously since 2021 — the most sustained volcanic activity in the country in centuries. The Grindavík eruptions have produced dramatic footage and drew international attention, and the Volcano Express was designed specifically to make that footage viscerally accessible without requiring visitors to approach active lava flows.

The experience is split into two parts. The pre-show area (approximately 30 minutes) includes live eruption footage on screens, four short volcanic films, an interactive eruption map showing Iceland’s current volcanic activity in real time, a live seismograph showing current earthquake data, and the Instacrater photo experience. Then the main ride (10 minutes) begins — you sit in dynamic motion seating and are taken from Reykjavik’s skyline through the volcanic landscape to an active eruption.
At $24.45 per person for the full experience, it’s competitive with similar immersive city attractions globally. The most consistent criticism is that it feels short — Adrienn S. (February 2026): “The experience is very short like about 9–10 minutes, but it is very realistic with beautiful imagery and sound and effects of the volcano from quakes to heat. It is like a roller coaster ride.” Joseph B. (April 2026) makes the important point: “To get the full experience, it’s necessary to view all the videos and educational materials on the walls in the rooms before going into the show. Otherwise you’ll really miss out.”
What Happens Inside the Volcano Express
Pre-Show Area — ~30 Minutes
Before the main ride, you enter the exhibition space on floor K2 of Harpa Concert Hall. This area contains: live eruption footage from Iceland’s current and recent volcanic activity; four short volcanic films covering different aspects of Iceland’s geology; an interactive eruption map showing the location and status of Iceland’s active volcanic systems; a live earthquake monitor displaying real-time seismic data from across Iceland; and the Instacrater photo experience. Joseph B.’s advice applies here: spend time in this area before the ride — it provides the context that makes the simulator experience more meaningful.
The Volcano Express Ride — 10 Minutes
You sit in dynamic motion seating in a state-of-the-art auditorium. The ride takes you virtually from Reykjavik’s skyline, out through the volcanic landscape of the Reykjanes Peninsula, and into an active eruption. The seating tilts, vibrates, and responds to the footage. Environmental effects include heat radiating from the lava sequences and subsonic audio that makes explosions physically felt rather than just heard. Holly D. (June 2025): “We enjoyed the movement and the heat. The storytelling was great! Only thing we wanted different was for it to be longer. It’s a very short experience (9 mins) but still worth doing if you’re exploring in the area near the Harpa.”

Know Before You Go
Spend time in the pre-show area before the ride — Joseph B.’s advice is the single most important piece of visitor guidance for this experience. The exhibition provides geological and historical context that makes the simulator more than just a ride. The Harpa Concert Hall itself is worth exploring before or after — it’s one of the most architecturally significant buildings in Iceland, designed by Henning Larsen Architects and opened in 2011. The waterfront location is ideal for a post-experience walk along Reykjavik harbour.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Joseph B, United States — April 2026
The theater show is immersive and very interesting to ‘fly’ through the volcanoes that are erupting and see this wonder up close. To get the full experience, it’s necessary to view all the videos and educational materials on the walls in the rooms before going into the show. Otherwise you’ll really miss out.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Elisa W, United Kingdom — November 2025
Informative and good fun! We all enjoyed it. 15 minutes long and got a free bit of local Icelandic chocolate!
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Holly D, United States — June 2025
This experience was a lot of fun. The operator was kind and explained the safety protocols clearly. We enjoyed the movement and the heat. The storytelling was great! Only thing we wanted different was for it to be longer. It’s a very short experience (9 mins) but still worth doing if you are going to be exploring in the area near the Harpa.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Adrienn S, Hungary — February 2026
The experience is very short like about 9–10 minutes, but it is very realistic with beautiful imagery and sound and effects of the volcano from quakes to heat. It is like a roller coaster ride. 20 EUR per head is a bit of overkill though.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Kathy C, United States — September 2025
This was a fantastic experience. Unfortunately the ride did break down 4 times before we got to see the whole thing but it was worth it in the end. Would have given 5 stars if the ride hadn’t broken down.
