What Makes the Katla Ice Cave Different from Iceland’s Other Ice Caves

Iceland has several famous ice caves — the Vatnajökull glacier ice caves near Jökulsárlón in the east are perhaps the most photographed, with vivid blue ice formations. The Katla cave is different in two key ways.

First, location: it sits directly beneath Katla, one of Iceland’s most powerful and historically significant active volcanoes. The glacier above the cave — Mýrdalsjökull — holds Katla’s volcanic force in check between eruptions. The last major eruption was 1918; Katla is considered overdue. This geological context, delivered by guides like Joao, Boris, Gabriel, Hawk, and Natti throughout the tour, makes the experience more than just a cave walk — it’s an education in Iceland’s volcanic forces.

Second, the ice itself. The Katla cave is striped with layers of black volcanic ash compressed between seasonal layers of ice — a visible geological record of past eruptions. Some years the cave shows more blue ice (silica-rich water frozen slowly), other years more black ice (ash-heavy). Allison K. (May 2026): “We went in early May and saw some gorgeous blue caves — this can vary by year: blue vs black vs a mix from the volcanic ash. Our guide Natti was full of great information and took some amazing photos for us.”

The access method is also part of the experience. The Kötlujökull glacier is not reachable by normal vehicle — you board a Super Jeep with oversized tires and adjustable air pressure that enables off-road travel through mud, river crossings, slushy terrain, and onto the glacier itself. The drive to the cave is described by multiple reviewers as “almost as impressive as the cave itself” — dramatic volcanic landscapes all the way.

At 4.7/5 across 1,134 reviews, the tour runs year-round and is consistently praised as one of the most memorable experiences on Iceland’s South Coast. The operator is Troll Expeditions, based in Vík, and customer service is specifically praised — when one group got a flat tire on the way to the meeting point, Troll and Viator worked together to accommodate a same-day date change.

What Happens on the Katla Ice Cave Tour

Meeting Point — Lobby of Vikinn Hotel, Vík

Arrive 20 minutes before departure

The meeting point is at the lobby of Vikinn Hotel in Vík (also searchable as ‘Troll.is Katla Ice Cave’ on Google Maps). This tour departs from Vík — not from Reykjavik. If you’re staying in Reykjavik, the drive to Vík is approximately 2.5 hours. Many guests combine this with the South Coast tour by spending a night in Vík. The guide briefs the group on safety and the plan for the day.

Super Jeep Drive to the Glacier

Off-road through volcanic terrain

You board a Super Jeep — a modified 4×4 with oversized tires whose air pressure can be adjusted for different surfaces. The guide explains the air compressor system en route. The drive takes you off the paved road and across the volcanic terrain between Vík and the Kötlujökull glacier: through mud, across shallow river crossings, over frozen patches, and through the landscape the glacier carved over thousands of years. Matthew B. (April 2026): “Joao navigated expertly, focused and planning his path ahead. The drive itself was fascinating to watch.”

Katla Ice Cave — Crampons, Helmet, and Glacier Walk

Core experience · All safety equipment provided

On arrival at the glacier, the guide fits everyone with crampons (metal spikes that attach to the bottom of your boots for traction on ice) and a helmet. The walk up to the cave entrance is relatively short — the terrain is 95% gravel and rocky moraine, with only a few icy sections where the crampons make a real difference. Rope handrails are provided along the paths. Susan T. (January 2026): “I was worried we would be walking on very icy surfaces but we weren’t. The ground was 95% gravel and only a few steps where it was icy but the crampons they provided were great. The walking was not more difficult than an uphill ramp and then back down again.”

Inside the cave, the guide explains the formation of the ice cave and its relationship to Katla Volcano — how the volcanic heat below creates the meltwater channels that carve the cave, how the ash layers in the ice record past eruptions, and why the cave’s shape and size change from year to year (some formations that existed previously have since melted away). The cave has its own ecosystem. The colors — black volcanic ice, blue glacial ice, occasional crystal formations — are best appreciated slowly, with the guide pointing out specific features.

Important Information

This tour departs from Vík, not Reykjavik. Vík is approximately 2.5 hours from Reykjavik by car. Plan your logistics accordingly — many guests combine this with an overnight stay in Vík or as part of a South Coast driving day.

Wear warm, waterproof clothing. The glacier environment is cold and can be wet. Waterproof jacket and pants, warm layers, gloves, and a hat are essential. Boot and jacket rentals are available at the meeting point if needed.

Sit toward the front of the Super Jeep if you have a bad back. Laura S. (February 2026) specifically noted that the back row was rough on a bumpy approach section, and that the PA system was harder to hear from the back.

Minimum age: 8 years old. The hike is manageable for most fitness levels — Susan T. (70 years old, January 2026) completed the tour without issues. The terrain is mostly gravel with rope handrails on icy sections.

Maximum 13 travelers. Very small group — more intimate than most Iceland tours.

Ice cave color varies by season and year. The cave shows different proportions of black volcanic ice and blue glacial ice depending on recent volcanic activity and seasonal melt patterns. Both are extraordinary.

Know Before You Go

This tour requires getting yourself to Vík first — factor in the 2.5-hour drive from Reykjavik, or plan an overnight in Vík the night before. The guide takes photos throughout and most guests get excellent pictures without bringing specialized equipment. Dress warmer than you think you need to — the glacier environment is significantly colder than the surrounding landscape. The tour runs in all weather conditions; the Super Jeep can handle most terrain, and the operator adjusts the route if conditions require.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Matthew B, United States — April 2026
Our tour guide was Joao — absolutely wonderful, extremely personable, and very knowledgeable. The hike up was scenic and rather short. Joao explained the science behind the cave formations, giving us insight into the beautifully powerful forces of Katla Volcano and the glacier. Having someone with deep care and profound knowledge just makes the experience all the more special. Also had great taste in music on the drive back!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Heidi C, United States — April 2026
We had an amazing time and our guide Boris was a huge part of what made it so special. From the moment we got in the super jeep, he set the tone — fun, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what he does. The drive out to the glacier was almost as impressive as the cave itself. Once inside, Boris guided us through the most stunning formations and made the whole experience feel adventurous but safe. Truly one of the highlights of our trip.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Allison K, United States — May 2026
Absolutely wonderful. We went in early May and saw some gorgeous blue caves — this can vary by year: blue vs black vs a mix from the volcanic ash. Our guide Natti was full of great information and took some amazing photos for us. It does require a little bit of hiking — they provide crampons. My 62-year-old mom did it no problem, but she’s an avid hiker.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Eric G, United States — March 2026
The experience is ONCE IN A LIFETIME. From the off-road raised jeeps to the actual cave experience and the views — absolutely INCREDIBLE. Shout out to Beda our guide — he loves what he does and was fantastic at teaching us the history of the caves and glacier. Very professional and personable.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Jennifer C, United States — March 2026
We had quite the adventure — our super jeep had a mechanical issue during a white-out while waiting for a mechanic. It was actually a blessing — we learned all about Iceland from Pablo and a new vehicle picked us up in no time. The glacier is unbelievable. Lots of hard-working guides kept the path clear. I cannot recommend it enough!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Camila W, United States — May 2026
The Viator team and Troll Expeditions were absolutely outstanding in accommodating our last-minute tour date change after we got a flat tire on the way. They made a stressful situation so much easier. The cave tour was even better than we expected — the Super Jeep ride was incredibly fun, the cave was much bigger than we imagined, and climbing the glacier was truly the highlight of our trip to Iceland. Guide Net was incredible — patient, knowledgeable, and took tons of amazing pictures.
