Why Combine the Golden Circle with the Blue Lagoon

The Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon are the two experiences that appear on nearly every Iceland itinerary — but they’re usually done on separate days. This tour combines them into one 11-hour day, which works because the Blue Lagoon is geographically on the way back to Reykjavik from the Golden Circle route. You spend the morning and afternoon exploring Iceland’s geological wonders, and you end the day soaking in geothermal water with a mud mask and a drink.

The addition of Kerid Volcanic Crater is the differentiator from standard Golden Circle tours. Kerid is a 3,000-year-old volcanic crater, 55 meters deep, with a vivid teal lake at the bottom surrounded by red and black volcanic rock. It takes about 20 minutes to walk the rim. The contrast of colors — deep red volcanic soil, black lava, blue-green water — is one of the most distinctly Icelandic visual experiences available. Many standard Golden Circle tours skip it; this one includes it.

At 4.8/5 across 2,215 reviews, the consistent praise goes to the guides (Siggi and Kuba appear most frequently in recent reviews) and the organization. Tim K. (May 2026): “The whole experience from booking through to drop off back at hotel was fantastic and so well organized. Kris our driver was very experienced — his knowledge, driving, humor all made the day perfect. The tour is 11 hours, but at no point did you feel you were on the minibus too long.”

One thing to know: the order of stops can vary day to day. Some groups visit the Blue Lagoon first (in the morning) rather than last. This is done to avoid peak crowds at the lagoon. One reviewer found “having a cocktail in there at 9:30am was a little weird” — worth knowing if the order matters to you.

The Six Stops on This Iceland Day Tour

Golden Circle Route — Drive and Introduction

1 hour · Free

After hotel pickup in Reykjavik, you drive east along the Golden Circle route. The guide provides an overview of Iceland’s geological context — the island sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart. This creates the volcanic activity, geothermal energy, and dramatic landscapes that make Iceland unlike anywhere else. The 300km circular route takes you through lava fields, geothermal areas, and into the Icelandic highlands.

Thingvellir National Park

45 min · Free admission (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Thingvellir is simultaneously one of the most historically and geologically important sites in Iceland. It was the location of the Alþingi — Iceland’s parliament — from 930 AD until 1798, making it the oldest parliamentary site in the world. Geologically, it’s where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates visibly meet — you can stand on the rift between two continents and watch the fissures where the plates are still slowly pulling apart at about 2.5cm per year. The rift valley and the views across the lake are extraordinary.

Strokkur Geyser — Geysir Geothermal Area

1 hr 20 min · Free admission · Food available on site

The Geysir geothermal area is home to Strokkur — the geyser that erupts reliably every 7–10 minutes, shooting water 15–30 meters into the air. The original Geysir (which gave all geysers their name) is nearby but no longer active. The area is covered with bubbling hot springs, steaming vents, and pools of boiling water in shades of blue and turquoise. Erika S. (May 2026): “Make sure you stick around for at least 10 minutes at Strokkur Geyser — it erupts every 5–10 minutes. We watched it erupt 3 times before we got a really high one.” There’s also time to buy lunch or snacks here.

Gullfoss Waterfall

1 hour · Free admission

Gullfoss — the Golden Waterfall — drops 32 meters into a rugged canyon of the Hvítá river in two dramatic tiers of 11 and 21 meters. Over 100 cubic meters of water pass through every second. On sunny days the mist creates rainbows across the falls; in winter the falls freeze partially, adding an entirely different kind of drama. The walk to the viewing platforms involves stairs and slopes — wear hiking boots. Jocelyn W. (May 2026): “The Gullfoss was just amazing. The walk was steep but definitely worth it.”

Kerid Volcanic Crater

20 min · Admission included

A 3,000-year-old volcanic caldera, 55 meters deep, with a vivid teal-green lake at the bottom. The crater walls are a striking combination of deep red volcanic soil and black lava rock. A path rings the entire crater rim — the walk takes about 20 minutes. Unlike most crater lakes in Iceland which require hiking to reach, Kerid is accessible from the parking area by a short walk. The color contrast of the landscape here — particularly in spring and summer — is genuinely extraordinary.

Blue Lagoon

2 hours · Comfort Admission ticket included

The Blue Lagoon is Iceland’s most famous attraction — a geothermal spa built in a lava field on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The milky blue water (the color comes from silica and algae in the geothermal water) is maintained at around 38–40°C (100–104°F) year-round. The Comfort Admission ticket included with this tour covers: entry, use of a towel, one silica mud mask application, and one drink of your choice (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). You have 2 hours at the lagoon. Jennifer N. (May 2026): “The blue lagoon was great — it wasn’t super busy during our 4:00 time slot, and it was a relaxing way to end the day!” Bring flip-flops and a bag for your wet swimsuit.

The Geysir area has a restaurant and gift shop if you want to buy lunch or Icelandic merchandise. USB chargers are available on the bus on some departures — confirm when boarding. Erika S. specifically notes: “If you don’t want to spend a whole day at Blue Lagoon, this is a great choice — we weren’t rushed at 2 hours, felt like we could enjoy it but not ‘waste’ a day.”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Erika S, United States — May 2026
Siggi is hands down the best tour guide out of so many tour guides I’ve had in various countries. He made the day 10x better — friendly, funny, and knowledgeable about Iceland. Every stop was gorgeous and unique. Make sure you stick around for at least 10 minutes at Strokkur — it erupts every 5–10 minutes. 2 hours at the Blue Lagoon was perfect — not rushed, could enjoy it without wasting a day. Thanks Siggi!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tim K, United Kingdom — May 2026
The whole experience from booking through to drop off was fantastic and so well organized. Kris our driver was very experienced — his knowledge, driving, and humor made the day perfect. We visited 4 places plus extra stops Kris thought we’d enjoy. The tour is 11 hours but at no point did you feel you were on the bus too long. Communication before the day was brilliant — no doubt about where to meet, what time, what bus to look for.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Prabhas C, India — May 2026
Really enjoyed the Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon tour. Kubas was a great guide — polite, friendly, never rushed. He gave us enough time at every stop to properly enjoy, take photos and relax. The volcano crater views were beautiful, Golden Circle spots were amazing, and ending at Blue Lagoon was honestly perfect.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Steven K, United States — May 2026
The tour surpassed all expectations. We spent just the right amount of time at every destination and because we made such good time on the road, we even got a couple short bonus stops. Helgi is a magnificent guide. Also, our bus was equipped with USB chargers for every seat — wonderful for keeping my phone charged for photos.

⭐⭐⭐ Sean M, United States — May 2026
My tour ended up being rushed because one member didn’t return to the bus on time, throwing off the schedule by 35 min. Then the tour guide stopped to pet horses which wasted another 5 min. Because we were short on time, I couldn’t fully explore the volcano crater. Worth knowing: the experience depends heavily on the group staying on schedule.
