The Reykjanes Volcanic Era and Why These Lava Fields Matter
The Reykjanes Peninsula began a new volcanic era in March 2021 when Fagradalsfjall erupted for the first time in over 6,000 years. Since then, nine eruptions have occurred in the Sundhnúkagígar crater row between December 2023 and August 2025 — the most sustained volcanic activity in this part of Iceland in nearly 800 years. The resulting lava fields are literally Iceland’s newest land, some of it cooled within the past two years.

Hiking to these lava fields is possible independently — but the terrain is rough, distances are significant, and the best viewpoints require off-road access that standard vehicles can’t provide. The Volcano Shuttle uses a modified Super Jeep to reach three viewpoints across the Geldingadalir and Sundhnúkagígar fields that would otherwise require serious hiking or be inaccessible. No hiking is required from the passenger — the vehicle does the work.
This is explicitly designed for travelers who want to see Iceland’s volcanic geology at close range without a physical trek. A Tripadvisor reviewer (April 2026) brought their family including a 5.5-year-old and added elderly relatives last-minute: “The driver/guide was very skilled and professional. Making the lava field and view accessible to even a family with young children and seniors.”
The Two Volcanic Stops
Fagradalsfjall Volcano — Geldingadalir Lava Field
15 min · Free admission
The Fagradalsfjall volcano, part of Iceland’s active Reykjanes Peninsula, first erupted in March 2021 after lying dormant for over 6,000 years. The eruption was relatively slow-moving — glowing rivers of lava rather than explosive activity — which made it one of the safest accessible active volcano viewings in history. The resulting Geldingadalir lava field is now cooled and walkable (though the Super Jeep gets you much closer than foot traffic). From the viewpoint you see the crater formation and the scale of the lava field it produced.

Geldingadalir & Sundhnúkagígar Crater Row
15 min · Admission included
Geldingadalir is the valley where the first 2021 eruption began, marking the start of the new volcanic era on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The guide covers the geological story of why eruptions are occurring here after 800 years of dormancy — the peninsula sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where tectonic plates pull apart, and magma periodically rises to fill the gap. The Sundhnúkagígar crater row erupted nine times between 2023 and 2025, adding new lava to the landscape each time and severely damaging the nearby town of Grindavík. A Tripadvisor reviewer (September 2025): “We took this tour a couple weeks after the July 2025 eruption. It was a wonderful experience!”

How the Tour Unfolds
| Season | Upsides | Downsides | Book Ahead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year-round | Lava fields are permanent and accessible in any season | Eruptions have paused — no active lava currently (as of 2025) | Book 89 days ahead on average — popular |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | Longest days, best visibility | Most tourists in Iceland | 2–4 weeks |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | Snow on dark lava creates dramatic contrast | Shorter days, colder | 1–2 weeks |

Not wheelchair accessible.
You make your own way to the meeting point. Geldingadalir Parking P1 is approximately 50km from central Reykjavik.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tripadvisor Reviewer, Family — April 2026
I booked with Icelandia and they were really nice and flexible, letting me change my time to a later one and letting us bring our 5.5-year-old and adding another adult last minute. The driver/guide was very skilled and professional. Making the lava field and view accessible to even a family with young children and seniors.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tripadvisor Reviewer — September 2025
We took this tour a couple weeks after the July 2025 eruption. It was a wonderful experience! Highly recommend. We are a family of 3, our son is 10 years old. Our tour was a small group of about 9 people and fit comfortably in the cool super jeep.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tripadvisor Reviewer — October 2025
We went with Tobi in the Superjeep. And it was really worth it. With gale force winds, we would have had difficulty making it on foot. The guide was interesting and entertaining — his knowledge brings the landscape to life.
